A father-of-two has died after he was crushed by a boulder while driving his family along a country road.
The 48-year-old was killed instantly after the rock, said to weigh nearly 20 stone, came loose from a hill overlooking the road and fell on top of their vehicle. Local reports said it had landed on his head after smashing through his windscreen. The two survivors were taken to hospital after suffering panic attacks. The tragedy took place around 2pm on Saturday on the AS-114 road near the tiny village of Trescares in Asturias, northern Spain, with the family thought to have been on holiday in the area.
The victim’s funeral is due to take place on Monday afternoon in his home town of Tomelloso, which is a two-hour drive south of Madrid. Civil Guard officers are investigating the incident. A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response team said: “A man has died after a rock fell on top of the car he was driving on the AS-114 road near Trescares. The alert was received at 1.56pm on Saturday. Firefighters were mobilised along with an air ambulance which wasn’t needed in the end.
“Emergency health responders confirmed the victim was dead on arrival at the scene. The two people accompanying him, a woman and a minor, were taken to hospital as a precaution. Firefighters recovered the trapped body of the driver after cutting through the car roof and removing the rock.”
In January a man told how he cheated death after his car was crushed by a falling boulder when he stopped along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu on the Californian coastline. Mauricio Henao was in the driver’s seat just moments before the roof caved in under the force of the tumbling boulder. He told local media afterwards he was saved by a phone call, explaining he heard the “loud crashes” of the rocks on the hillside behind him starting to slide after he got out of his car to answer his mobile.
